Aim To Stay Alive: Water Buffalo bulls are extremely tough and weigh 700-1000kg. Every hunt is different and exciting, and sometimes they charge. Greg and Sue Scott arrived in Darwin in late June 2011 and flew by Charter plane into Arnhem Land. Greg carried a CZ 375H&H with Ziess scope and after 2 days of hard hunting, had passed up many nice Bulls. Suddenly a huge Buffalo bull stepped out of a creek and looked back at us, I immediately knew this was one of the biggest I had ever seen. Greg quickly got into position and fired at 60m but it took off, he fired again when it looked back. It was hit hard twice in the chest, but ran off and we expected a dead Bull very soon. Greg reloaded and we crossed the creek, after 300m we found it again, but it was moving into thick bush. I double checked Greg had 5x solids, then we slowly followed the blood trail, step by step we scanned the heavy bush. All of a sudden from about 18m the wounded Buffalo charged flat out with head up. I jumped to the side and yelled for Greg to shoot, at 8m his bullet went over the Buffalo’s head and skimmed the back. It kept coming straight at me, and now lowered its massive horns ready for impact. I quickly fired my 465 Express Holland & Holland double rifle at 6m into the head. The Woodleigh solid impacted hard, but it kept coming (had missed the brain), so I pulled the barrels down during recoil and through the gun smoke I aimed and fired exactly between the Buffalo’s horns into the brain and dropped the bull at 4m. Its body ramming its head and 54” heavy horns into the ground as it skidded to a halt. Our 3 shots were all fired very quickly!!! We shook hands and noticed both hands were already shaking. This is the 9th time I have been charged by Water Buffalo. Our first 2 charging shots were totally ineffective because we both rushed. Its apparent that guides and hunters MUST practice quick close shots, and if you are involved in a charge take an extra 1/2 second to follow, and aim deliberately and accurately. Aim to stay alive..!!
Arnhem Land – Real Wilderness Australian Buffalo Hunters specialize in exciting dangerous game hunting safaris for Water Buffalo, Scrub Bull (Ox) and Wild Boar. Arnhem Land is almost 100,000 square kilometers of pristine wilderness, where local Aborigines live in small communities, hunting, fishing and following traditional values. This is one of the world’s last true wild adventures, hunting on foot the old fashioned way, and getting close up on large herds of Buffalo and exceptional Buffalo bulls. Visiting Arnhem Land is a privilege few hunters will ever experience.
Ethical and traditional dangerous game hunting is our passion. We have 4 highly productive long term concessions in central Arnhemland. (No Swamps, wetlands or ranches). Terrain is scenic rivers and valleys producing 90-110SCI bulls, and open savanna country with wide heavy bulls of 1-1.3m (40-50”) spread.
This is Australia’s best ‘wild’ dangerous game hunting adventure.
Classic Tented Safari Camps Like an old African expedition, our safari camps are always close to herds of wild buffalo. Large canvas tents, flush camp toilets, hot showers, great meals and drinks. Real hunters will enjoy our remote safari camps and a true adventure. Season: June, July, August.
